Are you an expert Spelunker or a novice Repeller? Have you
always wanted to try it? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you
should try the Mercer Caverns. The Mercer Caverns has already celebrated a
century of survival about two decades ago! In fact it is the longest continuous
operating commercial caverns in CA. The experience beyond the history will
surely get you hooked.
The Mercer Caverns has enjoyed being the host to thousands yes thousands of
people who have been thrilled to and exhilarated by descending down the three
million year old cave! These people include presidents and even royalty!
Fortunately, the Mercer Caverns hasn’t been completely frozen in time. It has
updated stairs and lighted walkways while preserving its ancient possessions --
the most precious of them being the rare Aragonite flos ferri.
The Mercer Caverns truly has a unique feeling through out and amazes all who see
it. Believe me, a visit to the Mercer Caverns won’t come as a disappointment
especially to those interested in art or archaeology. The shear ancient history
of the caverns is its own experience. The tours at the Mercer Caverns are
approximately 45-minutes long and are guided. All tour participants must be able
to descend 16 flights worth of stairs and then ascend up it again.
Children below the age of five are allowed in the Mercer Caverns, but must be
under adult supervision at all times. However I would like to warn you that
although very small children may be brought along, parents are responsible for
their children at all times and for anything their children may do. The most
important thing to consider when thinking for bringing the kids is that the
stairs are steep and narrow, and bringing small children to the Mercer Caverns
may not be that easy a task.
