Black Oak Casino
BLACK OAK CASINO
Before there was the Black Oak Casino, before there was a Tuolumne county,
there were Me-Wuk Indians. The Me-Wuk territory spans a large region along the
Central Sierra Nevada area in California.
The Northern Me-Wuk region includes present day Amador and Calaveras counties,
the Central Me-Wuk homeland is comprised of the Sierra Nevada counties of
southern Calaveras and Tuolumne, and the Southern Me-Wuk homeland is bordered by
Mariposa county and Yosemite National Park. The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians,
who own and operate Black Oak Casino are direct descendants of all three
regional tribes.
The main staple food of the Me-Wuk diet was the black acorn. In fact, one of the
main ceremonial dances of the Me-Wuk Indians is in respect to the Black Oak
Acorn. There are many acorn pounding rocks throughout the historic Me-Wuk
villages that can be found to this day. Black Oak Casino was appropriately named
after the Black Oak Acorn.
Gambling is nothing new to the Me-Wuk Indians. Games of chance have been played
throughout their history. The “Hand Game” is one of the more popular games, and
is played while singing gambling songs. Games can last for minutes or for days
as teams compete in the guessing the “bones.” There is an annual Hand Games
Tournament held as a part of the Tuolumne Rancheria’s “Acorn Festival” every
September.
Black Oak Casino offers so much for you and your family; you’ll hardly know
where to begin. There is the 24-lane bowling ally, Black Oak Lanes, where the
whole family can have fun together. Every Friday and Saturday night they have
Cosmic Bowling with crazy light effects, music, and even balls that glow! If you
want to have some adult fun but want to feel safe and secure about where your
children are, Black Oak Casino has an underground arcade that is safe and fun
for kids of all ages, where they can play for prizes, enjoy dozens of the latest
games, or just hang out with cool music and lighting. When it’s time to meet the
kids to get a bite to eat, meet them at the Kingpins Family Eatery. It has a big
menu sure to please every member of the family, and it’s close to the bowling
ally and arcade so the kids don’t have to go far and you don’t have to worry
about wandering around the casino.
Every Wednesday through Saturday, Black Oak Casino has live music in the Willow
Creek Lounge, with national touring acts every Friday and Saturday starting at
9:00 p.m. The entertainment lounge has seating for 200 plus, casino games, dance
floor, a full-service bar, and video bar top slots. On Wednesday nights from
7:00 – 10:00 p.m., Black Oak Casino revs up the fun with the Karaoke Gong Show,
where a live house band backs you up as you sing today’s top 40 hits and the
audience decides who wins the weekly prize for the most talented performer.
There are several places to eat at Black Oak Casino, depending on what you’re in
the mood for. The Black Oak Café is right next to the casino action and has
weekly themed buffet specials, is family-friendly and open 24 hours. There is
also the Kingpins Family Eatery and The Mill Sports Bar for family dining. Black
Oak Casino knows that not everyone likes inside cigarette smoke, so there is a
non-smoking casino room with it’s own bar, the Manzanita Bar. Of course there is
the Willow Creek Lounge for cocktails as well. For fine dining and superb taste,
make a reservation at Seven Sisters, where there is patio seating overlooking
the Sierra mountains.
