I loved the fact that it was a quick walk to the private lake,
downtown, and to the pee wee golf course. My kids had a blast in Twain
Harte... Great Vacation!

Have you heard of the Yosemite National Park? Oh! How stupid can I be, off
course you would have? Then you probably would also have heard of the Hetch
Hetchy. You haven’t (Shocked)? I knew it. It is so unfortunate that only a group
of people have heard of the Hetch Hetchy National Park although it is second
only to the Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Valley.
Have you heard of Josiah D Whitney? Now read his comment as well. "Hetch Hetchy
is almost an exact counterpart of the Yosemite. It is not quite as grand a scale
as that valley; but if there were no Yosemite, the Hetch Hetchy would be fairly
entitled to a world-wide fame; and, in spite of the superior attractions of the
Yosemite, a visit to its counterpart may be recommended, if it be only to see
how curiously nature has repeated herself."
Although a dam has been built in the Hetch Hetchy, its long famous grandeur and
stunning characteristics haven’t been lost so far. It has been really
unfortunate that it lost out to the Yosemite National Park and is discarded of
the much deserving fame and appreciation.
Having said that, won’t my readers want to seek the answers to the mystery
behind the founding of the great Hetch Hetchy National Park? A long time ago the
Hetch Hetchy Valley was a part of the Yosemite National Park and it was being
filled by a reservoir. To protest against this a campaign was launched by John
Muir in 1901. I know you must be curious to know what was happening in the very
depths of John’s mind that time. This is what he wrote to his friend "We held a
Sierra Club meeting last Saturday--passed resolutions and fanned each other to a
fierce white Hetch Hetchy heat. I particularly urged that we must get everybody
to write to Senators and the president keeping letters flying all next month
thick as storm snow flakes, loaded with park pictures, short circulars, etc.
Stir up all other park and playground clubs, women's clubs, etc..."
Unfortunately, the Congress passed the Raker Act of 1913 to build a dam on the
Hetch Hetchy Valley although it was to destroy its beauty. The people’s
repression was turned futile here. Even though the Sierra Club failed, national
movements to protect other national parks like the Grand Canyon were launched
and the building of more dams were gradually stopped.
The Government’s carelessness had ruined the Hetch Hetchy Valley forever, but
even now its unique splendor and grandeur are still visible and appreciated by
those who visit it. Agreed that the Hetch Hetchy Valley has faced a lot of
injustice, but isn’t it time enough to make the repayment which humanity anyways
has to make one day. So why not make it now. We should try to protect any
national park from such brutal human activity.
I am sure that once you visit the Hetch Hetchy National Park, you yourself will
feel that it is one of the most beautiful valleys in the world and that there is
no place left for any doubts. If you don’t believe me, you can ask anybody, yes
anybody who have visited this park. After all, the second best always doesn’t
have to be forgotten, does it?
